Tiger Prawns Song

Submitted by Vivek Hattangadi on Fri, 12/14/2012 - 05:59
Recipe Description:

A variation of the most popular amchigele dish - batatya song. Some like it spicy, some very, very spicy!

Serves:
4-6
Ingredients:

Tiger Prawns - 1 kg kilo washed and deveined Heads to be removed!

Good quality very red bedgi chillies 5-6 or 10-12, or 12-24 depending on whether you what you love it mild tangy-spicy, strong tangy-spicy or 'fire-brigade calling' hot and spicy :, made into a very fine paste

Onions chopped finely

One ball of tamarind, about the size of a small lemon soaked in water

50 to 60 ml pure edible coconut oil - VERY ESSENTIAL FOR THE TRUE WEST COAST KONKANI FLAVOR

Salt to taste

Turmeric powder

Instructions:

Marinate the deveined prawns in a small portion of the chilly paste, turmeric powder and salt - leave for three hours

Pour coconut oil into a shallow pan and heat it, When hot, add chopped onions and the remaining chilly paste and tamarind water, squeezed very tightly from the ball.

Add the marinated tiger prawns along with the marinade.

Add some water, salt and cook until the prawns are soft. Unlike batatya song, DO NOT PRECOOK THE PRAWNS - COOK IT IN ITS OWN JUICES.

Takes around 30-45 minutes to cook.

Have it with dali toy and ukdo tambdo rice.

Personally, I prepare tiger prawns song with extra gravy and relish it with parboiled red rice (tambdo ukdo tandul).

I did not know that we made Song from anything but potatoes. Will try this next time I feel like having Song.
